Motorhome electrician: 12V/230V repairs and electrical autonomy

We intervene on breakdowns and installations related to cell and 230V electricity, both for repairs and upgrades.

Troubleshooting 12V cell

In particular, we deal with :

  • Cell battery: loss of capacity, abnormal discharges, charging problems, connections/oxidation, circuit breaker, replacement and adaptation to existing system.
  • Distribution and protection: fuseholders, blown fuses, relays, switchboard power supply, earth faults, unsuitable cable cross-sections, voltage drops.
  • Consumers: water pump, lighting, fridge, heating, controls, USB/12V sockets, ventilation, additional accessories (router, camera, etc.).

 

Intermittent faults: flashing lights, equipment restarting, voltage variations, false contacts, unstable earth (often the real cause of “phantom faults”).

Troubleshooting 220V

We work on :

  • 230V external socket: power supply, continuity check, tightening, condition of terminals.
  • Earth leakage protection/circuit breaker: tripping, insulation test (where applicable), identification of a faulty device vs. wiring fault.
  • 230V charger: charge diagnostics, check curves (bulk/absorption/float depending on model), consistency with battery type, replace if necessary.
  • 230V socket network: wiring, connectors, heating points, protection and security.

Battery status and charge consistency

We check the actual state of the storage and what it receives

  • voltage at rest (after stabilisation), behaviour under load, checking connections,
  • load measurement (current/voltage) depending on the system (230V charger, solar, alternator/DC-DC),
  • identify voltage drops between load source and battery (cable, crimping, circuit breaker, fuse, earth).

Control of the 12V distribution circuit

We check the actual state of the storage and what it receives
We control the distribution of the cell:

  • condition of switchboard, fuses, terminal blocks, relays, general power supply,
  • search for permanent consumption and parasitic discharges,
  • mass control and negative returns (very often underestimated),
  • functional compliance: cross-sections, protection, quality of crimps, routing and mechanical protection.

Checking the 220V and safety devices

We check the actual state of the storage and what it receives
We analyse the 230V architecture:

  • external plug, protections, charger, network plugs,
  • identifying the causes of tripping (faulty equipment, humidity, damaged cable, connectors),
  • checking that the installation is reliable and safe, particularly in sensitive areas (switchboard, connections, heating points).

At the end, we explain where is the breakdown, why it appears, and what we're doing to stop it coming back. If an improvement in autonomy is relevant, we will propose a coherent, costed plan, without unnecessary oversizing.

Consumption audit: dimensioning based on reality

We start with your usage (fridge, heating, water, lighting, PC, Starlink/router, 230V appliances) and calculate in Wh/Ah, taking into account :

  • continuous vs cyclical consumption (duty cycle),
  • current peaks (pump, converter, compressor),
  • the season (winter/summer) and the amount of time without driving,
  • the safety margin (to avoid premature battery wear).

Results You know whether you need more capacity, better recharging, or both.

Batteries : AGM/GEL vs Lithium (LiFePO4)

We can advise you according to your existing installation and constraints:

  • AGM/GEL: simple solution, but limited range and heavy weight.
  • Lithium (LiFePO4): better depth of discharge and efficiency, but requires its own integration: protection, charger compatibility, appropriate charging while driving, and BMS management.

We don't “fit” a battery: we integrate it.

Recharging on the move: coupler/splitter or DC-DC

On many modern vehicles (controlled alternators / Euro 6), “conventional” charging via a coupler can become insufficient or unstable. Depending on the case, we can set up :

  • a suitable rolling charging solution (often DC-DC),
  • correct protection (fuses close to sources, large cross-sections, safe routing),

Solar: panels + MPPT + secure cabling

Effective solar energy means :

  • consistent sizing (useful power vs. surface area/roof),
  • a suitable regulator (often MPPT),
  • clean wiring (cross-sections, protection, sealing, routing),
  • and a logic of use (summer/winter, shade, parking).

We prefer sturdy installations that are easy to service and have a clean, protected assembly.

12V → 230V converter: power, safety, use

We install and size the converters (ideally pure sinus depending on your equipment), taking into account :

  • starting peaks,
  • sections and protection (this is where many installations become dangerous),
  • the overall architecture (charge priority, failover, battery use).

Why does the cell battery stop charging when driving?

Typical causes: a missing or faulty load connection (coupler, relay, fuse), a controlled alternator that doesn't “give” what the installation expects, a cross-section that is too small, a faulty earth, or a system that is not adapted to the type of battery (particularly lithium). The diagnosis will help you to make a quick decision.

Why does the 230V differential trip?

This could be due to a faulty appliance, damp, a damaged cable, a tired charger, or wiring that has become loose (overheating). First we identify whether the fault is on the device or the installation side, then we secure

Lithium: is it compatible with my motorhome?

Often yes, but only if the charging chain and protections are coherent: compatible 230V charger, suitable rolling charge, correct sections/protections, BMS integration respected. Otherwise, you create an unstable (and expensive) installation.

Will the installation invalidate my motorhome manufacturer's warranty?

No, if it is carried out according to the rules of the trade. We fit neatly into the existing circuit or create a dedicated circuit protected by fuses, without altering the original wiring harness of the carrier vehicle. Your guarantee remains intact.

I already have a solar panel, do I have to change everything?

Not necessarily. During the audit, we test your current panel. If it's performing well, we can keep it and simply change the regulator (for a Victron MPPT, for example) or add a second panel in parallel to boost production. We only make you change what is necessary

How many solar panels do I need?

You size it according to consumption + season + time off the road. A serious answer depends on your actual use, not a magic number.
